Tell us about your business?
I’m part of AE Hoskins Building Services, our family’s building company based in Perth. The business was founded by my great-grandfather, Arthur Edward Hoskins, back in 1911. Over 110 years later, we’re still proudly family-owned and now into our fourth generation of Hoskins involved in the business.
We carry out building and construction works across WA, with our head office in Perth and a office in Bunbury servicing the South-West region. AE Hoskins delivers multi-trade building and construction projects up to $10 million, focusing on jobs where control, cost efficiency, reliability, and consistency matter most.
What sets us apart is the way we operate. We directly employ our trades, leading hands, supervisors, and project managers, which gives us tighter control, lower delivery costs, and a more hands-on approach than builders who rely fully on subcontractors. Our hybrid model, combining strong in-house capability with trusted subcontractors, allows us to stay responsive and deliver quality, value, and consistency for our clients.
I’ve been involved in the business for 19 years, and my brother Craig joined seven years ago after gaining experience in the construction industry. Together with our parents, Mick and Carol, we’re proud to continue the AE Hoskins legacy while bringing in new ideas around technology, leadership, and innovation.
What has been your greatest success?
Our biggest success has been building and maintaining a loyal client base and a committed team who genuinely care about the work they do. We’re also proud of how we’ve grown now employing more than 140 people, including 20 apprentices while keeping the same family feel and commitment to quality that’s been part of AE Hoskins since 1911.
What do you value about FBA?
I joined Family Business Association to connect with other family businesses who understand what it’s like to balance work, family, and legacy. Being part of a Forum Group has been really valuable it’s a space where I can share ideas, learn from others, and gain perspective from people facing similar challenges. It’s helped both personally and professionally as we continue to grow the business.
What advice would you give to other family businesses?
Keep communication open and define roles clearly it makes a huge difference. And most importantly, stay true to your family values. They’re what make your business unique and what people remember you for.
