We spoke with the team at Brooks Hire Service to learn more about their history and family business as they celebrate their 45th anniversary.
The History of the Family Business
Brooks Hire Service commenced in 1979 when Doug Brooks purchased two u/s compressors on bankcard. In 1982, the first piece of mobile plant was purchased by tender, an 8 tonne JEC crane which Doug drove to Eneabba, a small rural town 278kms north of Perth, Western Australia.
At the time, Doug was operating the business from a shed at Eneabba, working 18 hour days and living 5 days a week in a humpy at the back of the shed whilst also working locally as a fitter.
By 1987, the business was ready to open its first branch at Hogarth Street, Cannington and the first apprentice was hired. Five years later in 1993, Brooks Hire purchased a bigger and better premises at 30 Coulson Way, Canning Vale where the business is still in operation today.

The business has grown to include 19 branches Australia wide with over 5,000 machines in the Brooks Hire fleet. Brooks Hire Service is still 100% owned and operated by the Brooks family. They are proud to be the largest privately owned construction equipment hire company in Australia.

The Brooks Family has been a member of Family Business Association since 2018, connecting with like-minded families across Australia. They are also the recent winners of the 2023 WA State Family Business Association's Excellence Award in the Established Business category.
