Tell us about your business?

The Busby Family has proudly operated as a licensee of Budget Car & Truck Rental in Western Australia since 1980. The business was founded in Burswood, Perth by Bill Busby and his son John, beginning with a single location and a modest fleet of 26 vehicles. In 2019, we acquired the rights for the Avis Car Rental brand and now operate as a dual brand licensee for both Budget and Avis in Western Australia.

Today, John’s sons - myself and James - are the 3rd generation involved in the family business, where it has grown into a robust network of more than 16 locations across the state, with a diverse fleet of over 2,400 vehicles—including cars, trucks, buses, utes, vans, 4WDs, and specialty commercial vehicles. We have a deep understanding and knowledge of the vehicle rental industry, being a 3rd generation family-owned business with key executive staff who have been with the business for over 40 years.

We are committed to providing full support and outstanding service to all our retail, corporate and government clients. We try and instil our family values into the business and treat all stakeholders as if they were apart of our family. Our business is built on a foundation of strong relationships, dedication to our people and giving back to the communities in which we operate.

What has been your greatest success?

When Bill and John rescued the business from corporate collapse, when the stock market crashed in 1987.

Why did you join FBA?

We became members of FBA as our business has proudly entered its third generation of family ownership, with the fourth generation beginning to emerge over the past five years. We value the relationships made and discussions had between FBA members, and the extensive education resources that are available via FBA.

What advice would you give to other family businesses?

Communication, transparency and respect is key. Try and separate business from family life (where possible).
