We spoke with Daniel Moran, Managing Director of Moran Insurance Brokers to learn more about their boutique, family-owned business offering long term insurance solutions.

Tell us about your business?

Moran Insurance Brokers was started by my father with my mother’s encouragement and backing in 1979. We have always had success from the very beginning of our business being able to relate to the challenges people face with navigating the insurance market. The business started in Bank Place opposite the Mitre tavern, where many a beer was drunk and deals done on the back of a beer coaster.

From a small beginning the business moved to Queen St above a new agency two floors up with no lift. After paying rent for nearly 10 years in the city, the business moved to a little suburb called Richmond South, now known today as Cremorne in 1988.

We opened a second office in Altona North at Millers Junction in 2020 and moved our Cremorne office into the new buildings on the Nylex site.

After starting my career in 1993 with Moran Insurance Brokers for a year, I then ventured out and worked with an insurance company for 3 years and an International Insurance Broker for 4 years. I then joined back with Moran Insurance Brokers in 2000 when the mighty bombers won the flag.

After 12 years working with my Dad I purchased the business from my parents and became Managing Director.

Since then we have grown substantially and are looking forward to future growth. 

What has been your greatest success?

Investing in our staff heavily has assisted in our journey, with further studies being achieved through COVID and our senior staff averaging 10 years. Also doubling the business in the last 10 years.

Why did you join FBA?

Our business aligns with FBA values as most, if not all, our clients are family businesses. Initially I saw it as a good outlet to discuss issues we all face in business, share the insights I have learned in my business and learn from other family businesses.

What do you value about your Forum Group?

It has helped me tremendously from a business IQ, support network and peers who share their experiences and challenges whether it be business and/or family.

What advice would you give to other family businesses?

Be a part of FBA, as it has a wealth of knowledge, whether it be through Forum Group, functions or the access to outsource providers helping with the challenges of running a business.
