Tell us about your business?
As a proud family-owned and operated business, Mr Pothole has been delivering expert asphalt repair and maintenance services for over 35 years. Specialising in hand-laid asphalt and kerbing, we manage projects ranging from small pothole repairs to full resurfacing. Our extended list of services also include line marking, profiling, car park maintenance, speedhump and bollard installation, and more.
Our team’s commitment is to provide the right solutions for the varied needs and problems of our customers. With over 50 years of combined experience between our two senior supervisors, Ali and Scott, our asphalt crew pride themselves on delivering top-quality workmanship and exceptional customer service.
In 2013, Mark and Carol Rolston purchased Mr Pothole from its founding owners, seeing the opportunity to build upon the business’s strong foundations. Mark, with decades of small business experience, was soon joined by his daughter Jacqueline in 2016, after she transitioned from a corporate banking career to take on a key role in the family business. Together, they have expanded the team, strengthened customer relationships, and embraced new growth opportunities.
One such opportunity presented itself in 2018, when the business diversified by acquiring C & H Sweeping: a mechanical sweeping service led by supervisor Richard, who came with 35 years of industry experience. The addition of sweeping services was a natural fit with Mr Pothole, enhancing our ability to offer comprehensive road maintenance solutions to our clients.
The next generation of leadership took shape in 2023 when Jacqueline became an official co-owner in a commitment to keeping the business within the family. Around the same time, we welcomed Jack O’Mahony as a partner. Jack’s extensive experience at Rio Tinto, coupled with his enthusiasm for new opportunities, has further strengthened our leadership team.
Together, the Rolston and O’Mahony families share values of hard work, integrity, and dedication to quality. As we continue to grow, we hold tight to ensuring excellent service and innovative solutions for our customers. We are also committed to fostering a positive and supportive work environment, ensuring our team feels valued and part of the family.
Why did you choose to join FBA?
We joined FBA this year to network and meet like-minded people who are balancing family and business. Over several events we have already met some amazing people who have helped us with recruitment advice and marketing strategy. It is exciting to see where a simple conversation can lead to and are looking forward to making more connections through FBA.
What advice would you give to other family businesses?
Ensure time and space are given to have honest conversations around business planning and not assume that everyone in the team and/or family are on the same path and timeframes. It’s the combination of two age old sayings: “two heads are better than one” and “working on the business and not just in the business”. We find that coming together as business owners always leads to more innovation.
We’re excited to be part of Family Business Association and look forward to connecting with other family businesses across Western Australia. For more information on our services or to discuss a project, please feel free to contact us:
