Tell us about your business?

Our journey is one of determination, hard work, and a dream of creating a better life. In the early 1970s, we made the bold decision to leave our home in Lebanon and migrate to Australia – Joe, just 23 years old, and Karimie, 19. We saw Australia as a land of opportunity, a place where we could build a future for ourselves and our family.

Our first success came in 1990 when we were honoured with the prestigious Westfield Best Food Retailers Award for our family business. Outperforming global giants like KFC and McDonald’s, which was a huge accomplishment for us. It was a moment that reflected all the long hours, the care we poured into every detail and our deep belief in looking after our customers. That genuine commitment to quality and service helped us build something even more meaningful - a reputation that spread through word of mouth and a loyal following across the wider community.

In 2001, we embraced a new chapter and founded Old Time Bakery. We began with our traditional Tannour Bread -  an ancient Phoenician flatbread traditionally baked in clay or in-ground ovens known as "tannours." It’s a recipe passed down through our cultural heritage, and one that has long been a staple across generations - a communal food that brought families and neighbours together, whether around a village oven or a kitchen table. In many ways, Tannour bread represents more than just nourishment. It's a symbol of connection, heritage and home.

At Old Time Bakery, our version of this beloved bread honours those ancient traditions while bringing them into a modern context. Every loaf we bake carries with it a sense of history and deep respect for the generations that came before us.

The bread quickly became a local favourite, and our bakery’s reputation for quality continued to grow. We worked tirelessly to expand our product range, ensuring each item was crafted with the same care and dedication as our very first loaf.

In 2013, we made a bold move in the food industry by becoming a gluten-free-only establishment. This decision came from our commitment to providing a safe, high-quality option for people with Coeliac disease and those choosing a gluten-free lifestyle. Our premium gluten-free range quickly earned the trust of our customers, who knew they could rely on us for delicious, safe options made with care.

Today, you can find our bread stocked at food retailers near you, and for those a little further away — we proudly ship our products worldwide. No matter where you are, we’re honoured to bring a little taste of tradition, warmth and family to your table.

What has been your greatest success?

In 2021, Old Time Bakery reached one of its proudest milestones: being named a runner-up in the Ethnic Business Awards. To receive national recognition, with the Prime Minister in attendance, was an incredibly humbling and rewarding moment.

What do you value about FBA?

Becoming part of Family Business Association was a defining moment for us. We saw how strongly the Australian public connected with our story - a family-run business built on hard work, resilience and passion. Displaying the FBA emblem became a symbol of pride for us, and a quiet reminder to every customer who purchased our products of the strong family values and legacy behind each one.

What advice would you give to other family businesses?

Our advice to other family businesses is simple: Keep pushing forward and stay true to your values. Future generations will inherit not just a business, but a legacy of history, hard work and incredible stories to share for years to come.
