I’m John Warne, founder and owner of Pumps Australia. My career in the engineering industry has been shaped by decades of hands-on experience, global assignments, and a strong commitment to innovation.
I began my career working with leading international companies, including McGraw Edison in the USA. In 1981, my role brought me to Australia, where I was appointed to lead marketing operations for the company’s Australian division. Over the years, I undertook key assignments around the world, including in Iran, Israel, Libya, Algeria, Nigeria, Norway and Sweden. In these roles, I was responsible for the installation and servicing of pumps, compressors, and steam turbines for major international firms.
Those global experiences not only deepened my technical knowledge but also inspired me to start my own business. In 1998, that vision became a reality when I founded Pumps Australia.
Pumps Australia began as a very small operation, working out of a modest bedroom in a Bassendean quadruplex. I built high-quality pressure washers and transfer pumps from the carport. As demand grew, I secured land in Bayswater and personally oversaw the construction of a purpose-built 500-square-metre warehouse to support our expansion.
I still remember the long nights spent hand-painting roof beams after full days working in the business. It was a demanding time, but that determination and resilience continue to define Pumps Australia today.
In 2013, we relocated to a significantly larger facility in Welshpool, one of Perth’s key industrial hubs. Today, we operate from a high-profile 4,300-square-metre corner site, reflecting our strong reputation and continued growth in the industry.
We’re known for our extensive range of high-pressure washers, both hot and cold, as well as reliable transfer and trash pumps. Our products are powered by respected global engine brands, including Honda, Vanguard, Yanmar, and Kohler, and are recognised for their durability, performance, and quality. One of my proudest achievements has been designing a pressure cleaner and securing patent protection for its design a significant milestone in our innovation journey.
What has been your greatest success?
When I’m asked about my greatest success, I find it hard to point to just one thing. There have been many milestones across nearly three decades of growth. A key driver of our success has been my deep understanding of supply chains and a focus on developing improved product designs that outperform competitors.
I’ve always believed in investing in product development and having a go. You have to be comfortable with failure; it’s often part of the journey toward innovation and long-term success.
Pumps Australia continues to grow and evolve. We’ve recently received approval to commence construction on a new 5,600 square metre purpose-built facility on the corner of Orrong Road and Kewdale Road, with works beginning in February 2026. It’s an exciting new chapter in our expansion.
We’re a proudly Western Australian-owned and operated family business, and very much a family affair. My eldest son has played a vital role in the company since 2008, contributing significantly to our growth and day-to-day operations. My youngest son has also been involved at various times.

What do you value about FBA?

What advice would you give to other family businesses?
From lived experience, I can say that running a family business comes with both financial and practical complexities, particularly when it comes to stepping away. It’s important to understand the long-term realities of ownership, profitability and succession when planning for the future. Clear thinking and honest conversations early on can make all the difference.
