Founded in 1953, Queensland Gaskets was established by Quentin Quarterman in a modest worker's cottage on Hope Street, South Brisbane. Recognising a growing need for industrial gaskets amidst the post-war industrial boom in South East Queensland, Quentin established the business with a commitment to quality and customer service – principles that have driven seven decades of growth and innovation. Today, Queensland Gaskets stands as a leading Australian manufacturer of high-quality gaskets, sealing materials and specialised applications supplying to a diverse range of industries, including defence, aerospace, mining, construction, rail, utilities and energy. Their firm commitment to excellence is reflected in the precision and quality of every product they produce.
We spoke to Carl Quarterman to learn more about their family business, their rich history, their evolution over the decades, and their recent recognition as the Established Family Business for Queensland at the Family Business Award 2024/25.
Tell us about your business?
Queensland Gaskets has a proud history dating back to 1953 when it was founded by Quentin Quarterman in a small worker's cottage in South Brisbane. Quentin’s experience in gasket manufacturing and his resourcefulness were key to the company’s early success, even as he managed the business entirely by himself. Over the years, the company has passed through three generations of the Quarterman family. Each generation has contributed to the company’s growth and evolution, from Quentin's son, Guy, overseeing the expansion in the 1960s, to Carl, who now leads the business, driving innovation with advanced manufacturing technologies.
What sets us apart is our ability to innovate while maintaining strong family values. We specialise in high-precision, bespoke manufacturing using cutting-edge technologies like 5-axis waterjet and laser cutting, while also embracing digital manufacturing tools such as CNC routing. Congratulations on your recent Family Business Award, how does it feel to be recognised for your achievements?
Thank you! It’s an incredible honour to be recognised with the 'Established Family Business Award’ for Queensland. It feels like a validation of the hard work, dedication and vision that our family has poured into Queensland Gaskets over the past seven decades. This award not only recognises the efforts of our family but also the loyalty and support of our staff, customers and partners who have been part of this journey with us.
What did winning the award mean to you and your family?
Winning this award is a deeply meaningful milestone for our family. It symbolises not only the achievements of the past generations but also the promising future we are building for the next. It reinforces the strength of our values and highlights the importance of succession planning and strong family relationships in successfully running a family business. The award is a reminder that the legacy started by my grandfather Quentin, and carried forward by my father, Guy, will continue to thrive with innovation, integrity and a passion for manufacturing.
What has been your greatest success?
Our greatest success is the transition of the business through three generations, while continually innovating to meet modern demands. Each generational shift has brought about significant milestones—from Guy’s expansion of the company in the 1960s to my focus on adopting advanced manufacturing technologies and quality standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Our ability to maintain relevance in diverse industries such as aerospace, defence, mining, construction and utilities is a testament to our resilience and forward-thinking approach.
A key highlight of our recent success has been the acquisition of OSAAP Australia, which has enabled us to seamlessly integrate precision toolkit inserts and shadow boards into our product range. This acquisition has allowed us to diversify our offerings, enhancing efficiency, safety, productivity and sustainability for industries that require high-performance and precision solutions such as aviation, aerospace and defence. It has strengthened our position in advanced manufacturing, and by embracing opportunities like this, we continue to innovate and meet the evolving needs of our clients while prioritising sustainable growth.
What do you value about being a part of FBA?
We joined Family Business Association because we recognise the importance of learning from and connecting with other family businesses. FBA provides invaluable resources and networking opportunities that help us stay on top of best practices, particularly in the areas of succession planning and governance. The support and community that FBA provides has been invaluable in helping us navigate the unique challenges of running a family business and we are grateful for the knowledge and insights we have gained along the way. It is providing us with a broader knowledge and experience for consideration in planning the succession for next generations of the family.
What advice would you give to other family businesses?
Our advice to other family businesses is to set some key goals for the family. Family Harmony has always been a priority in the way that Guy conducted business with the family. Prioritising communication and planning within the family for succession, is critical— it should be approached with openness and professional guidance to ensure smooth transitions. Also, never shy away from innovation. It’s important to stay adaptable and continually look for ways to improve and grow the business, whether that’s through technology, new markets or diversification. Above all, maintaining strong family values and relationships is key to sustaining a successful family business.
