Topic: The Missing Discipline: Why Psychotherapy Belongs at the Heart of Family Business Advisory
Family business advisors do vital work across governance, succession, and decision-making.
Yet many governance and succession problems are really pattern problems—the behavioural loops that keep repeating under stress. Examples include:
- Enmeshment
- Triangulation
- People-pleasing
- Stonewalling
- Scapegoating
When these patterns take hold, conversations narrow, relationships suffer, and decisions stall.
Psychotherapy is the discipline of working with the underlying drivers of behavioural patterns—especially when the family system is under pressure.
In this session, family business psychotherapist Tom Skotidas will:
- Start with a brief story of a “stuck” family business and explore the moment advice stops working.
- Name the patterns that keep families stagnant. Tom will share examples advisors will recognise fast.
- Show where advisory reaches its natural boundary—then identify what to do next.
- Clarify the value that psychotherapy delivers. Tom will distinguish it from coaching, mentoring, consulting, and mediation.
- Offer a psychotherapy-informed model that will help advisors spot risk early and intervene competently.
