Who we are & What we do
Family Business Association (FBA) is the peak body for family businesses in Australia and New Zealand, helping them to grow and thrive.
We advocate for a sector that plays an integral role in our economy and social fabric, accounting for 70% of all businesses and 50% of the workforce in Australia, and 75% of business and the workforce in New Zealand. Family businesses of all sizes have a unique experience and set of distinctive challenges that sets their needs apart. FBA is uniquely family business focused, helping members navigate the nuanced intersection of family dynamics and business operations, supporting both the wellbeing of the family unit and employees, and the success of the business through generations.
Our members benefit from tailored education programs, member-only discounts, and valuable networking opportunities with like-minded peers through exclusive events and our Forum Group program. We also provide our members with tailored connections to FBA Accredited Advisors who are passionate and well-versed in the intricacies of family businesses.
No one in family business should feel isolated or overwhelmed. FBA provides a supportive environment for members to tap into a wealth of knowledge and shared experiences within a community that truly understands what it means to be in family business.
Family Businesses are the Backbone of Our Economy.
Family businesses are integral to Australia's economy, representing 70% of all businesses and employing 50% of the workforce. These businesses generate an estimated $4.3 trillion in wealth, highlighting their significant economic impact.
In New Zealand, family businesses represent a staggering 75% of all businesses, contributing approximately 65% to GDP, and employing around 75% of the workforce. Notably, the agriculture sector, which is pivotal to the nation's economy, is predominantly made up of family-owned businesses.
From small local shops to large multinational corporations, family businesses are the leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and job creators that keep Australia and New Zealand moving forward.
Family Business are Community Champions.
Beyond their economic contributions, family businesses are also champions of community support and philanthropy. They sponsor local sports teams, build community infrastructure, and establish foundations, making significant contributions to the social fabric of our communities. These philanthropic efforts underscore the deep-rooted commitment of family businesses to giving back and support the communities in areas where they operate.
Family Business are the Most Trusted.
Family businesses are not only trusted by consumers but also preferred. 70% of consumers trust family-owned businesses over non-family businesses, and 66% are willing to pay more for their products and services. Additionally, 54% of the workforce prefers to work for family businesses, reflecting the positive work environment and strong community ties these companies offer.
