Family Business Association proudly presents the 25th Anniversary Celebration in New South Wales on Friday 20 October 2023.

Family-owned businesses are significant contributors to the economic, social and cultural fabric of the countries they operate in and over the past quarter of a century FBA has forged strong partnerships and made a positive impact on family businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Our 25th anniversary presents a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to our past, acknowledge our achievements and envision an even brighter future.

Family Business Excellence Awards

This year we will also be announcing and celebrating your local Family Business Excellence Awards winners over a two-course seated lunch before the program begins.

Program Outline

Meet the speakers

Session 1: The power of passion: visionaries creating a lasting impact

David Green
Independent Family Business Consultant
Richard Owens
FBA Forum Group Facilitator
Garry Beard
A. H. Beard
Anesan Naidoo
Organisational Coaching Solutions

Every journey in the realm of family business is unique, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way are pivotal in shaping future pathways for multi-generational success. This session promises unique insights from three members who share a long association with FBA and its predecessor organisations.

In the early 1990s, David Green found his employer, Horwath’s, interest in family business particularly engaging; this, in turn, led to his involvement with the Australian Family Business Network, which later amalgamated with FBA. David’s passion for family business consultancy and his expertise in the craft has been honed over more than three decades.

Richard Owens grew up in a family with longstanding interests in grocery retailing; however, following a major restructure, Richard’s entrepreneurial spirit ultimately took him along a different path, which includes diverse (immediate) family business interests and education. Over the past 20 years, he has taught governance at various institutions and has chaired numerous family business organisations including FBA.

Garry Beard is Chairman and Managing Director of A.H. Beard, Australia’s oldest bedding manufacturer. He is a fourth generation member of the Beard family, with the fifth generation also working in the business. Garry has been an FBA member since 1999.

Facilitated by long-standing FBA Accredited Advisor, Anesan Naidoo, and drawing on their diverse perspectives of the intricacies of family business, David, Richard, and Garry will share aspects of their personal and professional journeys during their association with FBA. They will also reflect on substantial transformation within the sector over the past 25 years.

Session 2: Preserving tradition, embracing the future
Andy Kennard
Kennards Hire
Angus Kennard
Kennards Hire
Emily Hammon
Hammons Holdings

Built on strong family values and the determination to be the best in its sector, and to retain that status, Kennards Hire is the largest family-owned supplier of high quality hire equipment across Australia and New Zealand, with more than 180 branches in the region.

Facilitated by Emily Hammon, second-generation family member Andy Kennard and his son Angus will discuss the positive impact FBA has had on the ‘family’ aspect of their business. They'll share how core values shape their business behaviour and decisions, focusing on family governance, philanthropy, and professional growth.

This session highlights the power of values-led decision-making, which is woven into the very fabric of Kennards’ work and family dynamic, influencing all aspects of their business to ensure its success and continuity for future generations.

Celebrating 75 years as a family business!

Kennards Hire is a family-owned business that has grown into one of Australia's leading hire companies. With over 180 hire centres in Australia and New Zealand. Kennards Hire offers a wide and diverse range of tools and equipment to make your job easy!
