Family Business Association proudly presents the 25th Anniversary Celebration in Queensland on Wednesday 18 October 2023.
Family-owned businesses are significant contributors to the economic, social and cultural fabric of the countries they operate in and over the past quarter of a century FBA has forged strong partnerships and made a positive impact on family businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Our 25th anniversary presents a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to our past, acknowledge our achievements and envision an even brighter future.
Family Business Excellence Awards
This year we will also be announcing and celebrating your local Family Business Excellence Awards winners over a two-course seated lunch before the program begins.
Program Outline
Session 1: The power of passion: visionaries creating a lasting impact
Prof Ken Moores AM Bond University |
Prof Mary Barrett University of Wollongong |
Justin Taylor former Director, T&T Corporation |
Bruce Hatcher BDO Australia |
Every journey in the realm of family business is unique, and invaluable lessons learned along the way are pivotal to shaping future pathways for multi-generation success. This session promises diverse insights from three members who share a long association with FBA and its predecessor organisations.
For Bond University Emeritus Professor Ken Moores AM, interest in family business began in the early 1990s with some pioneering research on the subject, following which, as founding director and lead researcher, he established the Australian Centre for Family Business (ACFB). Later, Ken served FBA for 12 years as a director; he also created much of the content of FBA’s acclaimed education program.
Professor Mary Barrett from the University of Wollongong's School of Faculty of Business and Law has various research interests, including family business, and has co-authored two books on family business with Professor Moores: "Learning Family Business: Pathways and Paradoxes" and "Women in Family Business Roles: Daughters on the Stage", as well as many other research publications.
Justin Taylor was the Director of his family business, T&T Corporation and has led the company from strength to strength during his incumbency. Justin was a pioneer of the FBA Next Generation initiative, whose aim is to help the emerging generation of family business owners and operators, deal effectively with their unique issues in family business.
Facilitated by long-standing FBA Specialist Accredited Advisor, Bruce Hatcher, and drawing on their diverse perspectives of the intricacies of family business, Mary, Ken, and Justin will provide valuable insights into the essential elements that contribute to the success of a family enterprise.

Growing up in a family which, over successive generations, has displayed a remarkable inclination for diversification, Roz Shaw is well-versed in the realm of family business. Today, Hawkins Management Company, now entering its fifth generation, serves as a testament to this legacy. This multi-faceted entity comprises Hawkins Capital, a property business, as well as Hawkins' Moreton Island Adventures, an operation that oversees the largest and most advanced ferry in Moreton Bay. Another of the family’s interests is BGB Electric, a venture in its third generation that proudly involves two of current Group CEO, Roz’s three children.
Facilitated by longstanding FBA Specialist Accredited Advisor Marina Skinner, third and fourth generation members of the Hawkins family, Roz Shaw and her daughter Rachael, will reveal how their family has, through the generations, embraced the future while preserving tradition. They will highlight the multi-dimensional aspects of their family’s businesses and will reveal the way these enterprises have evolved and grown over the years, underpinned by professionalism, a results orientation and a steadfast commitment to family and future.
