Family Business Association proudly presents the 25th Anniversary Celebration in South Australia on Wednesday 20 September 2023.

Family-owned businesses are significant contributors to the economic, social and cultural fabric of the countries they operate in and over the past quarter of a century FBA has forged strong partnerships and made a positive impact on family businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Our 25th anniversary presents a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to our past, acknowledge our achievements and envision an even brighter future.

Family Business Excellence Awards

This year we will also be announcing and celebrating your local Family Business Excellence Awards winners over a two-course seated lunch before the program begins.

Program Outline

Meet the speakers

Session 1: The power of passion: visionaries creating a lasting impact
Dr Jill Thomas
University of Adelaide Business School
Alister Haigh
CEO, Haigh's Chocolates
Chris Johnston
former Managing Director,
J & AG Johnston

Every family business journey is unique, and invaluable lessons learnt along the way play a pivotal role in shaping the future pathways for successive generations.  This session will feature diverse insights from three South Australians who share a long association with FBA and its predecessor organisations.

High on the agenda for Alister Haigh, fourth generation Chief Executive of Haigh's Chocolates, is his mission to ensure the 108-year-old firm’s continuity as an iconic family-owned and operated business for generations to come.  Chris Johnston, on the other hand, has experienced significant restructure in his family’s businesses during the past decade including, in 2015, the voluntary liquidation of J & AG Johnston Ltd, the oldest known family business in South Australia at the time.

Dr Jill Thomas has dedicated her career to research and higher education, specialising in the field of small-to-medium sized family-owned businesses.

Jill, Alister and Chris will share enlightening "ah-ha" moments experienced during their involvement with FBA. Each will offer their unique perspectives and explain how these experiences have guided their path in family business

Session 2: Preserving tradition, embracing the future
Ennio Mercuri
Managing Director
ennio International
Mary Mercuri

ennio International
Dr Darryl Cross

For progressive family businesses, awareness of the need for change is vital; reinvention is far more significant and challenging, but ennio International has reinvented itself – with great success – during its impressive 65-year journey. Founded by visionaries Giovanna and Gervasio, the company's success is rooted in creativity, continuous innovation, and a commitment to excellence.

In this inspiring story, husband and wife Ennio and Mary Mercuri will share with us the positive influence FBA has had on them and their family business. Facilitated by long-standing FBA Accredited Adviser, Darryl Cross, hear how the second generation is steering ennio International towards further success, by embracing change while preserving the core values instilled by its founders.
