Tell us about your family business.
Golden Bakery was founded by my parents, Cong and Kim, who migrated to Australia from Vietnam. They wanted to create a better life for our family and saw that they could combine their passion for cooking to build a brighter future. What began as a small shop has now grown into a well-known bakery business with both retail and wholesale operations across Western Australia. We currently operate two retail stores, one in Perth CBD and the other in Osborne Park, alongside our production site.
Our product range is a blend of classic Australian favourites like meat pies and sausage rolls, paired with the warmth and generosity of our family culture. We take pride in creating generous and quality products, made with care and consistency. As the second generation now leading the business, I’m focused on preserving our values while modernising our systems and setting strong foundations for growth. What sets us apart is our commitment to quality, community and continual improvement. We never lose sight of the people we serve and the people behind the scenes.
What has been your greatest success?
My greatest success has been leading our family business through a transition of growth while preparing for succession. I’ve worked hard to honour the legacy my parents built while introducing new systems, investing in our team and planning for sustainable expansion. One of the most meaningful moments was seeing our brand become widely recognised not just for our products, but for the values we stand for - generosity, resilience and quality. Being able to give my parents the opportunity to step back and choose how they want to work, while securing a future for our next generation, is something I’m incredibly proud of.
What do you value about FBA?
I joined FBA because I was looking for a network that truly understands the unique challenges and rewards of running a family business. I value the practical resources FBA offers, and even more so the sense of community and support. Knowing that I’m not alone in navigating family dynamics, succession and long-term strategy has helped me make more grounded decisions for the future of our business.
What advice would you give to other family businesses?
My advice would be: communicate clearly and often. Running a family business comes with emotional ties and generational differences, so it’s vital to have open conversations and set clear roles and boundaries. Also, don’t be afraid to invest in professional systems and external support - even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Growth doesn’t mean abandoning your roots; it means building a stronger foundation for them to flourish.
