This month's topic: Conflict in Family Business

Conflict in family businesses is inevitable, but it is different from conflict in non-family enterprises. It is systemic, identity-based, and complicated by the fact that - even after disputes - family members remain connected. Drawing on my 33 years in a UK family business, I share how unresolved conflict between siblings can escalate from passive avoidance to active hostility, ultimately leading to family breakdown. Conflict and disputes are not the same: disputes can often be resolved, but systemic conflict must be managed. Using frameworks like the Conflict Equation helps families understand triggers, reasons, and dynamics, making conflict more manageable.

The takeaway: expect conflict and address it early, before it damages both business and family.
