In the heart of Brisbane's James Street precinct, a new gem has emerged: The Calile Hotel. This luxurious destination isn't just another boutique hotel; it is the latest chapter in the enduring legacy of the Malouf family, a family whose name has been synonymous with ambition, elegance, and a deep commitment to the community for over a century. We spoke with the Malouf Family to learn more about their family business and their history.
The Malouf Family’s story
The story begins in 1892 when Calile Malouf (originally Khalil) and his wife, Ada, left Lebanon in search of a better life in Australia. Settling in South Brisbane, Calile's entrepreneurial spirit soon flourished. By 1901, he had invested in his first property, and by 1919, he had established Calile Malouf & Sons, a business that would become a cornerstone of the family's legacy.
The Malouf family's reputation for business acumen continued to grow with each generation. Michael Calile Malouf, the second generation, began working in the family business at the age of 14. He eventually became the governing director, steering the company through numerous expansions and further cementing the Malouf name in Brisbane's business community.
Michael Calile’s eldest son, Calile Malouf Sr., took over the reins with the same fervour and dedication, committing 60 years to the family business. Under his leadership, the Malouf family's portfolio expanded, leading to the establishment of the James Street Market in 2002, a venture that set the stage for their latest triumph: The Calile Hotel.
The Calile Hotel
Enter the dynamic duo of Calile (Cal) and Michael Malouf, the brothers who have taken the family legacy to new heights. Both joined the family business in their early 20s, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. In 2014, the Malouf brothers decided to transform a 1.8-hectare site into a boutique hotel, embracing the subtropical climate and vibrant culture of Brisbane.
The Calile Hotel stands as a testament to the Malouf family’s vision and commitment to quality. Featuring high-end retail shops, a 26-metre pool, a poolside bar and restaurant, a day spa, and a function centre, The Calile is set to become a landmark in Brisbane.
Named after their great-grandfather, The Calile Hotel is more than just a business venture; it's a tribute to the Malouf family's rich history. The lobby bar and restaurants are designed to be accessible to the general public, reinforcing the family's commitment to the community and their desire to make James Street one of the best retail streets in Australia.
