We spoke with FBA member, Val Montagnana-Wallace at Hyphen, to have a chat about her family business.
Tell us about your business?
My brother Leonard and my husband Neil started Bounce Books in 2006. After Neil and I bought out my brother’s share, we expanded our storytelling offering from coffee-table books to also include films and installations. That’s when we became Hyphen. We are currently growing our skillset to also offer digital timelines and the like. I run the business, and Neil is currently our in-house writer.
What has been your greatest success?
I’m most proud of our ability as a team to be utterly unfazed by a new challenge. Sometimes a client will ask us for something we’ve never done before, or never done in a particular way, and my amazing team of creative problem-solvers never say no. We say, “Ok, what do we need to be cautious of? What could go wrong?” And then figure out a pathway through that.
What do you value about FBA?
When you’re up to your eyeballs running a business, you don’t always know what you don’t know. Not to mention the unique challenges (and benefits!) of being a family business. I love knowing that I’m not alone.
I feel so lucky to have this Brains Trust of incredible women in my FBA Forum Group, all at different stages in their businesses, that I can turn to for advice and support. I also love being able to contribute my own experience in the hope of helping them in some small way, the way they do me.
Hyphen is also a proud sponsor for FBA’s Family Business Conference 2024: Asia Pacific.
