Family Business Association proudly presents the 25th Anniversary Celebration in Victoria on Tuesday 10 October 2023.

Family-owned businesses are significant contributors to the economic, social and cultural fabric of the countries they operate in and over the past quarter of a century FBA has forged strong partnerships and made a positive impact on family businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Our 25th anniversary presents a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to our past, acknowledge our achievements and envision an even brighter future.

Family Business Excellence Awards

This year we will also be announcing and celebrating your local Family Business Excellence Awards winners over a two-course seated lunch before the program begins.

Program Outline

Meet the speakers

Session 1: The power of passion: visionaries creating a lasting impact
David Smorgon
Generation Investments
Angela Ciliberto
Technologica
Quin Scalzo
Scalzo Food Industries

Every family business journey is unique, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way are pivotal in shaping future pathways for multi-generational success. This session promises unique insights from three individuals who share a long association with FBA and its predecessor organisations.

David Smorgon was a senior executive and Director of Smorgon Consolidated Industries (SCI), one of Australia’s largest family-owned companies. After the sale of SCI in 1996, David set up Generation Investments with his three sons, Dean, Ricky, and Dale. In 1998 he became the inaugural chairman of Family Business Australia and held the position until 2002.

Angela Ciliberto is the founding Director of her family’s business, Technologica. She has been a member of FBA and part of its original Forum group since 1998.  Following a career in the public and private sectors, Angela purchased the original retail business in February 1978. Joined by her husband Peter in 1979, today the family business is managed by the next generation and employs 20 people including 5 family members.

Quin Scalzo's entrepreneurial spirit led to the founding of the family-owned and operated business, Scalzo Food Industries (SFI), in 1977. Presently, SFI stands as one of Australia’s largest privately owned food ingredient suppliers. Quin has also been a Forum group member for over 20 years.

Drawing on their diverse perspectives of the intricacies of family business, David, Angela, and Quin will provide valuable insights into the essential elements that contribute to the success of a family enterprise.

Fotini Kypraios

In today's world of family businesses, younger generations often have big ambitions and are redefining the work landscape. One major difficulty for families is making their young members feel enthusiastic about the family business, including the values and traditions it carries from the past and their vision for the future.

Good governance is key to helping the next generation feel prepared to join and work in the family business and ensuring that the complexities of the business don't discourage them.

The Dennis Family Corporation is one of the leading and most influential businesses involved in major residential community development and home building activities in Victoria, Queensland and southern New South Wales and has been actively forward-thinking to ensure successful transition.

Facilitated by FBA Specialist Accredited Advisor Fotini Kypraios, second and third generation Adele Levinge and her son William will share with us how effective governance and injecting independent thought into their successful family business will carry it through future generations.

The Dennis Family Corporation is one of Australia’s largest privately owned residential developers and home builders. From humble beginnings in 1960, the founding Chairman, Bert Dennis, has created a business that today prides itself on excellent service, superior quality product, cutting edge design, and honesty and integrity in everything they do.
